A newly-hatched insseven-spottedins ladybird beetle Coccinella septempunctata, seen next to its empty pupa-case on the underside of a leaf. When the insseven-spottedins ladybird first hatches into an adult it is yellow and without spots (as here). Black spots begin to emerge within minutes of hatching and in hours the outer wing-case has turned the familar red. The fragile hindwings, or flight wings, seen protruding here, are normally folded away beneath the protective outer wing- case. The ladybird is drying out its hindwings after metamorphosis. Both the larva & adult beetle of Coccinella septempunctata feed on aphids.
