Macrophotograph of eggs of the Desert Locust Schistocerca gregaria, showing the development of the embryo, notably the red pigmented eye-spot. The female uses the tip of her abdomen to excavate a hole in the ground into which she lays a clutch of up to one hundred eggs. Under conditions of overcrowding, nymphs of this species undergo a 'phase' change both in colouration and behaviour. They mass together in enormous numbers, becoming highly excited & set off in a purposeful manner devouring all vegetation that they encounter. The nymphs transform into adults, which form the familiar devastating flying swarms of locusts.
