Ben Nevis Observatory. Historical photograph of Ben Nevis Observatory, the first high-altitude meteorological station in Britain, which opened in 1883. Ben Nevis is the highest mountain in Britain, standing 1344 metres tall. The observatory was set up to measure the weather at altitude, and encompassed measurements of temperature, wind speed, rainfall and atmospheric pressure. The observatory was closed in 1904 due to a lack of funds.
