Angle measurement. Engraving of a cannon and a device (top right) for finding its firing elevation. This device and method were devised by the Italian mathematician Niccolo Tartaglia (1501- 1557). In his treatise on gunnery, Nova Scientia (1537; insNew Scienceins) Tartaglia showed how the path of a projectile is curved, and that a projectile travels the furthest distance when fired at an angle of 45 degrees to the ground.
