Lime kiln. The kiln operator is removing a sample of burned lime from the rotary kiln. Limestone (calcium carbonate) is heated to break it down into lime (calcium oxide) and carbon dioxide. Lime is used to make cement for the construction industry, and converted to slaked lime (calcium hydroxide) to neutralise acidic soils for agriculture.
