MODEL RELEASED. Videodisc held in a hand. This disc is an early version of the optical disc format. It stores audio and visual signals in a analogue form. The disc is made from aluminium sheets bonded together and held between two sheets of plastic. The surface of the disc is pressed with pits and lands created using frequency modulation (FM). The disc is read by a laser and is replay-only. It has random access features similar to audio compact discs. These discs were marketed in the early 1980s though were unable to compete against Video Home System (VHS) magnetic tape and have since been superseded by compact discs (CDs) and digital video discs (DVDs).
