Tilbury power station, Essex, UK. This is a 1400 megawatt power station, which is fuelled by coal and is situated on the River Thames. Coal is delivered by ship and the generation process is cooled by re-circulating water from the Thames. Almost a third of the ash produced during the combustion of the coal is sold for use in the construction industry. Tilbury has conducted trials with biomass materials such as wood and palm kernels. It has also received authorisation for the commercial operation of the station using wood as a replacement for some of the coal. Photographed in 2005.
