Radon detector. Equipment used to detect the presence of the radioactive gas radon dissolved in pulverised fuel ash (PFA). PFA is the solid material left after combustion in coal-fired power stations. Radon is produced by the decay of the small amounts of uranium found naturally in all rocks and soils. Exposure to radon increases the risk of developing lung cancer.
