Mir space station. View of the Russian space station Mir (peace) backdropped over the blue and white Earth. At lower right are damaged solar panels attached to the Spektr module of the space station. Mir was struck by a Progress unmanned supply vessel on 25 June 1997. The collision punctured Spektr near the base of the damaged solar panel and caused it to depressurize. The crew successfully isolated the damaged module. Spektr is one of several science modules which have been added to Mir since the core (centre) of the space station was launched in 1986. Photographed from the space shuttle Discovery during mission STS-091 (2-12 June 1998).
