Optical photograph of the Andromeda Galaxy (also known as M31 and NGC 224) and its two companion galaxies: NGC 205 (top right) and NGC 221 or M32 (lower centre). Andromeda is the largest of the Local Group of galaxies, which includes our own Milky Way galaxy: its full diameter is nearly 150,000 light years and it contains some 300 million stars. The two companion galaxies are elliptical, made up of old red stars.
