Supernova remnant IC 443, optical image. This large red cloud of gas in the constellation Gemini is thought to have been cast off in a supernova explosion, or death of a large star, around 8000 years ago. The core collapses and the outer layers are ejected into space. The collision of this material with the surrounding gas generates temperatures high enough to ionise the hydrogen, which glows red.
