Emission nebulae NGC 7822 and Ced 214, optical image. This region of nebulosity contains several individually named nebulae. NGC 7822 itself is the bright red region across upper centre. The paler and slightly more pink region at lower left is called Cederblad (Ced) 214. The entire region is a vast cloud of gas and dust that glows as the hydrogen gas within it is ionised by radiation from nearby hot young stars. Silhouetted against the bright nebulae are several dark lanes and knots of dust, which may be condensing into stars. These nebulae are located about 2750 light years from Earth, in the constellation Cepheus.
