Elephant's Trunk nebula, optical image. The Elephant's Trunk nebula, also known as IC 1396 and VdB 142, lies around 2400 light years from Earth in the constellation Cepheus. It is a site of star formation, where embryonic stars are seen within the cavity (orange, slightly left of centre). The huge star to the left of the nebula is HD 206267, one of the many hot young stars that ionise the hydrogen gas in the nebula clouds, causing them to glow red. This image was produced using the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, Mauna Kea, Hawaii, USA.
