Mars Science Laboratory (MSL). Artwork of the MSL rover analysing a rock on the surface of Mars. This rover is in development by NASA for launch in 2009. It will be equipped with an instrument that uses a laser to determine the chemical composition of samples, a technique referred to as laser breakdown spectroscopy. It will have six wheels to enable it to cope with rocky terrain.
