Universal grating and prism spectrograph. The equipment seen here is used to analyse the spectrum of the light from the sun and stars, a process known as spectroscopy. This can be used to determine the chemical composition of the stars, and identify different types of stars. This is one of the spectrographs at the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory (DAO), in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. The DAO was founded in 1914.
