Human skin section. Light micrograph of a section through skin from the region around the lip. The epidermis can be seen at right and consists of a dead outer skin layer (stratum corneum, dark red) and a living underlying layer (stratum germinativum, pink). The dermis (blue) is the thickest skin layer, consisting of fatty and connective tissue, and lies underneath the epidermis. A sebaceous gland (white and pink), which secretes oil, is seen spanning the dermis and epidermis layers at centre right. Azan stain. Magnification: x75 when printed 10cm wide.
