A design for a mask used to administer ether, from an engraving in a book by Dubrueil in the mid-19th Century. Ether was one of the earliest anaesthetics to be used. It was difficult to administer as it made the patient choke. For a time, ether was replaced by chloroform in anaesthesia, but made a comeback after chloroform proved to be more dangerous.
