Digestive system. Artwork from Andreas Vesalius's anatomical textbook De Humani Corporis Fabrica, published 1543. The abdomen of this male cadaver has been dissected, and the liver (top) reflected upwards to reveal the underlying organs. The stomach is at centre right, the gallbladder and adjoining bile duct at centre left, and the intestines, with attached folds of peritoneal membrane known as mesentry, at lower right. Vesalius (1514-1564) was a Belgian physician, often referred to as the father of modern anatomy.
