Dissection of the face muscles. 18th century anatomical artwork of a dissection of the muscles of the face and neck. The dissection has revealed the right-hand collar bone (clavicle), the muscle attaching the collar bone to the chin, and the diagonally opposite muscle attaching the sternum (breast bone) to the skull behind the ear. One of the salivary glands is seen below the ear, and the trachea (windpipe) is seen in the throat. The complex arrangement of muscles in the face allow humans to communicate emotion with a wide range of facial expressions. Artwork from around 1745, by the French artist Jacques Fabian Gautier d'Agoty (1717-1786).
