Skull, jaw bone and teeth. Artwork taken from Govard Bidloo's Anatomia Humani Corporis (Anatomy of the Human Body), published 1685. The skull and jaw bone, or mandible, are both seen from the front and from below. At top left are the teeth. The curved bone at lower right, between the two views of the jaw bone, is the hyoid or lingual bone. This bone, found in the neck, is not articulated with any other bone but is supported by the neck muscles. It is an anchor for the root of the tongue.
