MODEL RELEASED. Dispensing medication. Pharmacist giving boxes of medication to a patient. The boxes being held are labelled Truvada. This is a combination dose of two antiretroviral drugs that are used to treat HIV (human immunodeficiency virus). HIV is a retrovirus that invades the body's immune system cells that are used to protect against pathogens. HIV can lead to AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome), where infections and tumours invade the body because the immune cells cannot function properly. There is no cure for HIV, but these drugs can prolong the lives of those with it. Photographed at St. Mary's Hospital in Lacor, Gulu, Uganda.
