MODEL RELEASED. Baby with atresia. Mother watching over her two-week old baby who is being treated for atresia, a birth defect consisting of a deformed or absent bodily opening or passage. There are several types of atresia, ranging from intestinal atresia (malformation of the intestines) to oesophageal atresia (where the oesophagus ends in a pouch rather than connecting to the stomach). Treatment for atresia depends on which type it is, but usually involves surgery to create an artificial opening called a stoma. Photographed at St. Mary's Hospital in Lacor, Gulu, Uganda.
