Smoke-related illnesses. 16-year-old mother sitting with her 1-year-old baby by an open wood fire used for cooking. She is rubbing her eyes and the baby is coughing. Open wood fires create a lot of soot (on walls) and smoke. This can lead to diseases caused by smoke inhalation. Devices such as ceramic stoves and smoke hoods can reduce such diseases. Photographed in January 2006 in Korando village, near Kisumu, Kenya. For images showing the use of smoke hoods, see images M935/293-294.
