Human papillomavirus infected cervical cells. Light micrograph of cells from a cervical smear that are infected with the human papillomavirus (HPV). These cells are showing a typical morphology of infected cells, having a clear cytoplasm and enlarged nuclei (purple). HPV causes genital warts. Although most warts are non- malignant (non-cancerous) some strains of HPV have been associated with cancers, especially cervical cancer.
