Intra-uterine adhesion surgery. Hysteroscopic view of uterus adhesions (white fibres, right) being cut. Adhesions are bands of scar tissue that form between organs in response to tissue trauma. When adhesions grow within the uterus, it is known as Asherman's syndrome. They can develop in response to a uterine assessment ('dilation and curettage') after a miscarriage, abortion or birth. The adhesions prevent the uterus from responding normally to oestrogen and can lead to amenorrhea (absence of menstruation) and infertility. This can sometimes be resolved by surgical removal.
