When adhesions grow within the uterus, it is known as Asherman's syndrome. They can develop in response to a uterine assessment ('dilation and curettage') after a miscarriage, abortion or birth. The adhesions prevent the uterus from responding normally to oestrogen and can lead to amenorrhea (absence of menstruation) and infertility. This can sometimes be resolved by surgical removal.
