MODEL RELEASED. Thalassaemia treatment. Ambulatory drug infusion pump being used to treat high blood iron levels in a patient being treated for the blood disorder thalassaemia. Thalassaemia is an inherited condition where the red blood cells are fragile and easily damaged. Patients require regular blood transfusions, but this raises the levels of iron in the blood. The excess iron can be removed by treatment with a chelating agent (which removes heavy metals), in this case Desferal (deferoxamine). This is the Crono ambulatory infusion pump from Microjet. It uses a pressure pump (in hand) to infuse the drug through a subcutaneous needle (under the dressing on the patient's thigh).
