Facial reconstruction, CT scan. Coloured 3-D computed tomography (CT) scan of a child who has had facial reconstruction. The child is suffering from noma (cancrum oris). This infectious disease mainly affects children from developing countries. It is a form of gangrene that causes severe bone and tissue loss around the face. Noma has a high mortality rate if left untreated. The scan shows reconstructive surgery, in the form of bone from the top of the skull (calvarium flap) that has been grafted onto the left cheek. This image was produced using a multi-slice CT scanner, which uses a thin X-ray beam to scan around the patient. OsiriX medical imaging software was used to produce coloured 3-D images which can be animated.
