Slipped disc. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of an axial (horizontal) section through the lower spine of a 35-year-old man with a slipped disc. The front of the body is at top. Intervertebral discs separate and cushion the vertebrae, or bones, of the spine. However, when under pressure, the discs can be forced through weakened areas of their casings and protrude into the spinal cord. The prolapsed disc can be seen as a white protrusion beneath one of the vertebrae (black oval, centre). This pressure on the spinal cord may result in tingling or numbness in the feet and legs. Treatment includes rest, anti-inflammatory drugs and physical therapy.
