Fractured forefinger. Two X-ray images showing the top and side view of a fractured forefinger in the hand of a patient. The bone (known as the phalanx) in the forefinger has an unstable fracture. This type of injury occurs when the hand is trapped or crushed, for instance if it was caught in a car door. Treatment includes immobilising the fingers by putting them in a splint, allowing the bones to heal correctly, and applying a cold compress to the hand to relieve the pain and bruising.
