Oesophageal stricture, X-ray. Profile view of the chest of a patient with a narrowed oesophagus (gullet) after swallowing a caustic chemical. A contrast medium was swallowed prior to the X-ray being taken to highlight the oesophagus. Inflammation and scarring caused by burns from the chemical have narrowed the oesophagus at centre. Treatment is with dilation of the oesophagus. In severe cases part of the oesophagus may need to be surgically removed and replaced with part of the intestines.
