Avascular necrosis in the femur. Gross specimen of the head of a femur (thigh bone) showing avascular necrosis, also known as osteonecrosis. This is the death of bone tissue due to a loss of blood supply. The tissue death causes the bone to collapse. The loss of blood may be caused by trauma or disease. Treatment is with removal of the affected bone and replacement with a prosthesis.
