Narrowed arteries. Coloured 3D computed tomography (CT) scan of the pelvis of a 78 year old patient with narrowing (stenosis) of the iliac and femoral arteries. At centre are the bones of the pelvis, with the femurs (thigh bones) at lower left and lower right. The iliac and femoral arteries supply the legs with blood. The stenosis is caused by atherosclerosis, a build up of fatty plaques (atheroma) on the inner lining of the arteries. The plaques have also become calcified and hardened. Treatment is with balloon angioplasty or a stent to reopen the arteries. One of the patient's pelvis bones is also fractured (centre left) following a fall.
