False-colour angiograph (arteriograph) of the neck & upper chest areas of a person suffering from extensive vascular disease. The aortic arch - the curved section of the aorta, the body's main artery - is at bottom. Dark pink areas represent atheroma, or fatty plaque, deposits. On the left, the right innominate artery rises & branches to the left (the right subclavian artery supplying the right arm) & top (the right common carotid artery); both these arteries are affected by diffuse atheroma deposits. The absence of detail for the left subclavian & carotid arteries, both of which arise directly off the aortic arch, indicates total thrombosis or clot blockage.
