Gout. Gout is a disease that results from a disorder of the uric acid metabolism, commonly associated with decreased uric acid clearance by the kidneys. Normally, the human bloodstream only carries small amounts of uric acid, but an elevated concentration will cause deposits of monosodium urate crystals in synovial joints and nearby connective tissues. The deposition of crystals causes local inflammatory swellings that are extremely painful.
