Addison's disease. X-ray of the abdomen of a patient showing calcification of an adrenal gland (grainy oval, upper right) caused by Addison's disease, a disorder that results from the adrenal glands producing insufficient hormone. Addison's disease may be caused by a disorder with the adrenal glands themselves, or insufficient secretion of the hormone that stimulates the adrenal glands by the pituitary gland. Symptoms include chronic fatigue, muscle weakness, vomiting, diarrhoea, low blood pressure and a bronze skin pigment. The cause of calcification is not known. Treatment is by replacing the hormones (cortisol and occasionally aldosterone) that are not being produced with synthetic versions.
