He trained as a doctor and spent most of his career as a haematologist at Guy's Hospital in London, serving in the Royal Army Medical Corps during World War II. His amateur astronomy work included identification of many comets, observing solar eclipses, and observing Mars. He was awarded the Jackson-Gwilt Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society (1942). After 1950 he was largely confined to a wheelchair due to polio, but continued his astronomical and medical work. He was President of the British Astronomical Associaton (1954-1956).
