Beauty products advert from 1920. This advert is for beauty products sold by Madam C. J. Walker (1867-1919), one of the first African-American millionairesses. Walker, born Sarah Breedlove, rose from cotton-picking on a plantation to working in a laundrette, to founding a hair and cosmetics company. She traded under the name of her third husband. She expanded the business, and by 1917 it was the largest in the USA owned by an African-American. After her death, it was run by her daughter. This advert is from the 17 January 1920 issue of The New York Age, a newspaper which was one of the most widely read African-American newspapers in the 1890s.
