Andrew Taylor Still (1828-1917), American founder of osteopathy. Still had some medical training from his father and from Kansas City College and practised medicine from 1849, serving as a surgeon during the American Civil War. In 1874 he announced that bone and joint disorders, infectious diseases and degenerative conditions could be cured by manipulation and massage of muscles, joints and bones. He named this new technique osteopathy. In 1892 he founded a medical school and an osteopathy journal in 1894. Modern practitioners do not claim to be able to treat infectious and degenerative disorders. Photograph taken in 1914.
