William Stukely. Portrait of William Stukely (1687-1765), British archaeologist and friend of Isaac Newton. Stukely surveyed Stonehenge and was the first to conclude that it had been used as an astronomical observatory, though he also incorrectly believed that it had also been a druid temple. Stukely was a Fellow of the Royal Society like Isaac Newton. Stukely recorded Newton's story that the fall of an apple led Newton to the idea of gravity. Portrait of Stukely aged 34.
