William Osler (1849-1919), Canadian physician. Osler began his career at McGill University, Canada before becoming the first professor of medicine at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. In 1905 he became a professor at Oxford University, UK. He contributed towards reforms of medical education, believing passionately in the importance of clinical experience. He founded the practice of residency which allowed medical students to recieve practical training in hospitals. His Principles and Practice of Medicine, published 1892, was a standard textbook for forty years. This photograph is from the Bain News Service, one of America's oldest news picture agencies, which holds images dating from the 1890s to the 1930s.
