Portrait of Otto Meyerhof (1884-1951), German- American biochemist and Nobel Laureate. Meyerhof studied medicine at Heidelberg, initially specialising in psychiatry but later turning to biochemistry. After a period working with Warburg, Meyerhof conducted experiments showing how lactic acid was formed in muscles during work, and how it was removed at rest. In 1938 he moved to France, and in 1940 escaped to the USA. There he worked at Philadelphia until his death. He shared the 1922 Nobel Prize for his work on lactic acid.
