Lord Lindsay (1847-1913), British astronomer, and 26th Earl of Crawford (born James Ludovic Lindsay), caricature. Lindsay, with his father, developed a private observatory in Aberdeenshire, along with an extensive library. He made expeditions to observe the solar eclipse in Cadiz in 1870, and went to Mauritius in 1874 to observe the Transit of Venus. Lindsay was also the 9th Earl of Balcarres, and was elected Member of Parliament for Wigan in 1874. He was President of the Royal Astronomical Society (1878-1880). This artwork is by Leslie Ward, and was published 12 August 1908 in the British weekly magazine Vanity Fair (1868-1914), in the 'Men of the Day' feature.
