Sir Joseph Norman Lockyer (1836-1920), British astronomer. Lockyer started his career as a civil servant, later turning to astronomy. He discovered an unknown element in the Sun by spectrographic analysis, naming it helium (from the Greek helios for Sun). In 1869, he founded the scientific journal Nature, which he edited for over 50 years. He was awarded the Rumford Medal of the Royal Society in 1874. In 1875, he founded what became the Science Museum in London, England. He was the Director of the Solar Physics Observatory in London from 1885 to 1913, at which point the observatory moved to Cambridge.
