John Harvey Kellogg (1852-1943), American doctor. Although most familiar as the inventor of corn flake breakfast cereal, Kellogg gained fame as a medical doctor promoting holistic medical methods. At the Battle Creek Sanitarium, Michigan, he focused on treating disease through nutrition, enemas and exercise. He was an advocate of vegetarianism, and an outspoken campaigner against masturbation, which he believed was a form of self-abuse that caused acne. This portrait is from the Bain News Service, one of America's oldest news picture agencies, which holds images dating from between the 1890s and 1930s.
