Portrait of Dr Jules Jaffe (b.1951), US research oceanographer and inventor of insFish-TVins. This is an ultrasonic sonar device, which could be used in non-invasive studies of marine zooplankton and higher life forms in situ. Two small arrays, one for transmitting and one for receiving, are able to locate small marine fauna to a distance of several metres and with a resolution of two degrees. The data from the arrays are fed into a computer, which then produces a three- dimensional map of the distribution of animals in the water. Fish-TV is a prototype for a larger system to be used at sea. Photograph taken at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in 1993.
