Hermann Volrath Hilprecht (1859-1925), German-US archaeologist, on board a ship. Hilprecht gained his PhD in Leipzig in 1883, moving to the USA in 1886 to become professor of Assyriology at the University of Pennsylvania. He led several expeditions to what is now Iraq, excavating thousands of Sumerian objects from archaeological sites. He also worked on the Babylonian collection at the Imperial Ottoman Museum in Constantinople (present-day Istanbul, Turkey). This photograph, which was taken in the period from the 1890s to the 1930s, is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries.
