Andre Jacques Garnerin (1769-1823), French balloonist and parachutist. Ballooning equipment and flags are seen around the portrait, and a balloon and clouds are seen in the background. Sketch made by Edward Hawke-Locker during their aerial voyage made on 5 July 1802. Garnerin is famous for making the world's first parachute descent, in Mousseuax Park, Paris, France, on 22 October 1797. The parachute supported a basket, and was attached to a balloon. Garnerin released himself from the balloon at a height of about 1000 metres, and the basket descended safely to the ground below the parachute.
