Robert FitzRoy (1805-1865), British meteorologist and vice-admiral in the Royal Navy. Born into the British aristocracy, FitzRoy entered the Royal Navy aged 13. He is best known for captaining the HMS Beagle during its famous voyage on which Charles Darwin was a passenger. FitzRoy did a great deal of scientific work himself, in geographical surveying, navigation, astronomy and chronometric measurement. After serving as Governor of New Zealand from 1843-5, he developed an interest in meteorology and pioneered accurate weather-forecasting. His methods were controversial among his peers, and the challenges of establishing a weather service led to his depression and eventual suicide.
