John Evershed (1862-1956), British astronomer. Evershed began his astronomical work in his private observatory in Surrey, UK, concentrating on solar phenomena. Following his participation in a solar eclipse expedition to India in 1898, he became Assistant Director at the observatory in Kodaikanal, southern India in 1911. Here he described the Evershed effect, or radial motions in sunspots. He was awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1918.
