Helene Dutrieu (1877-1961), Belgian aviator, wearing an aviator's cap. Dutrieu had a successful career as a cyclist and stuntwoman when, in 1908 she was asked by the Clement-Bayard factory to be a test pilot for a new ultralight plane. She crashed the plane on her first flight, but improved her later flights. By 1910, she had become the fourth woman in the world to obtain a flying license. Over the next three years she won numerous competitions and awards. She was awarded the Legion of Honour in 1913. Photograph from the Bain News Service.
